Tech update

Urrgh. Dead laptop. Not too fun, but hey, it happens. Which led me of course to get A: a new computer, which inevitably leads to B: other stuff discovered during the process of upgrading.

My new cellphone - SE 790a

Got me a new cellphone. Sony Ericsson k790a.

I've been wanting a decent camera phone, and this is the first one they've managed to make. I've already posted some pics from it. It's not a high end camera, but it is as good as any disposable camera I've ever owned, so it's ideal for the type of snaps that most people take, and the cellphone format means I'll actually carry it, and get the snapshots that I always wish I had a camera for.

So, that's why I bought it. Here's the review at the one day point.

Wonder if this'll work

I'm just curious about how easy it is to link something from YouTube:

We'll see. ;)

Fricking teleportation..... for real!

CNN.com - Scientists teleport two different objects - Oct 4, 2006:

Teleportation... who wooda thunk it...
Scary that my first thought was "this is going to make security a fricking nightmare"

AHA! Been searching for this

So, how do you convert a .lit file into something useful for Mac osx users?
Check out Convert LIT.com:

Just for the record, the .lit format is reason #72984612 to hate Microsoft.

I hope this helps someone else looking for it. I still haven't found a mac .lit reader that reads the files directlly, but something command line that converts it is good enough for me. Now I can convert them into pdb's to read on my palm pilot.

MS offers job to ESR

Eric - Microsoft tries to recruit me:

On the day *I* go to work for Microsoft, faint oinking sounds will be heard from far overhead, the moon will not merely turn blue but develop polkadots, and hell will freeze over so solid the brimstone will go superconductive.

hehe.

I really, really, really fucking hate Monsanto.

From Greenpeace:No More Patents on Life
Monsanto has filed several patents on breeding herds of pigs. The only "invention" is a particular combination of natural breeding methods and ways of screening for particular genetic characteristics. But they are claiming patent on the resulting pig and its genetic makeup, meaning anyone raising pigs with similar characteristics will be violating their patent.

This is only the latest attempt by Monsanto to monopolize a food source -- other examples being their relentess attempt to create global hegemony around single genetically-engineered seed species that they own, without regard for negative environmental and biodiversity impacts.

Tell Monsanto to stop using patents to try and control our world's food supply. It's time for a moratorium on patents on life.

Gives new meaning to the term Capitalist Pig.

A primer on encryption.

As anybody who has received email from me knows, I use GPG. Here's a quick primer on encryption..

Encryption is good thing. The more of us who use it, the harder it is on those people who wish to eavesdrop on our private conversations.

Here's my public key, in case you're interested:

MS steps up it's attacks on IP

So, the assault begins. Are you noticing over there in Europe? Do you see what you have to look forward to? Microsoft can't just look the other way, you know. If you empower them, you will feel it too. The EU has it in the power of its hand to block this patent plan. FOSS companies have few if any patents to cross license, which will no doubt lead to phase two of the strategy. If you want to use GNU/Linux systems, the time to notice what is going on is now.

I'm assuming that you folks are reading Groklaw...
