“The government has no plans in that regard,” Harper said. “If there were any time in the future when fundamental freedoms were threatened, of course the government would respond to protect them. The government has no plans at this time.”
i think this is a wee bit disingenuous -- we've already had (in a couple of provinces) hum an rights decisions which have forced civil marriage officiants to perform same sex marriages when those officiants have attempted to refuse for religious reasons. Now, i'm a big fan of said human rights decisions, but i'm betting that the Harpies view this as a "threat to fundamental freedoms". I'm betting we'll see a DORA (defence of religion) type act in the future from this govt. Of course, any attempt by the feds to legislate w/r/t provincial performances of marriage is ultra vires and will be struck down as unconstitutional, but that's not likely to stop 'em...
